A Wildfire Threatens the Town in the Drama-Filled "Virgin River" Season 5 Trailer

A lot goes down in season four, so there are plenty of lingering questions and plot points that will no doubt be explored in season five. WARNING: Spoilers ahead!

Toward the end of season three, a paternity test finally confirms Mel's unborn baby's father is Jack, not her late husband. Just when all appears well with the now-engaged lovebirds, Charmaine, Jack's ex who's also pregnant with his twins, drops a massive bomb on them. When she calls him in a panic, Mel and Jack go to her and find her on the floor in pain, and her dire situation prompts her to confess that Jack isn't actually the father of her babies. In season five, we can probably expect to see the aftermath of Charmaine's big reveal and how that will affect Jack's involvement in the lives of her twins. Moreover, we'll get to watch Mel and Jack navigate their own pregnancy and maybe a trip down the aisle now that they've gotten engaged.

Hope, who gets in a massive car accident in season three and is still reeling from the traumatic experience throughout season four, finally agrees to an additional home health aide. Season five could explore her journey to recovery now that she's agreed to get proper treatment.

Meanwhile, Brie's sexually abusive ex, Don, reappears in season four and threatens her to sign an NDA, but she shuts him down, stands her ground, and promises she'll be pressing charges against him, so fans can definitely expect that to be explored next season.

Finally, it's revealed in season four that crime boss Melissa Montgomery is Nick's — aka Jack's glamping business investor's — sister. We can totally see Jack's business getting into murky territory now that he's unwittingly joined hands with the criminal head honcho.

Here's what "Virgin River" has teased of season five's plot: "Issues of motherhood push Mel to make a big decision about her future at the clinic while her pregnancy unexpectedly sparks an emotional connection to her past," the logline reads. "To further prove himself to Mel, Jack squares off with some long-overdue confrontations — with his own demons, and of course, Charmaine. And as Doc and Hope's respective impairments throw their identities into question, the doctor and the mayor must find solace in their community, in their young new family, and in each other."

Central characters are all expected to return to season five, including Breckenridge as Mel, Martin Henderson as Jack Sheridan, Tim Matheson as Vernon "Doc" Mullins, Annette O'Toole as Hope McCrea, Colin Lawrence as John "Preacher" Middleton, Lauren Hammersley as Charmaine Roberts, Benjamin Hollingsworth as Dan Brady, Sarah Dugdale as Lizzie, Zibby Allen as Brie Sheridan, and Teryl Rothery as Muriel.

Based on the official table-read update shared on the series's Instagram account on July 18, 2022, many series regulars will be reprising their characters. The complete list of cast members joining for season five includes Mark Ghanimé as Cameron Hayek, Marco Grazzini as Mike, Nicola Cavendish as Connie, Keith MacKechnie as Nick, Jenny Cooper as Joey, Gwynyth Walsh as Jo Ellen, Kai Bradbury as Denny, Chase Petriw as Christopher, Trevor Lerner as Bert, Christina Jastrzembska as Lydie, and Emma Oliver as the younger version of Mel.

Per Netflix, additional cast members are Stacey Farber, Lucia Walters, Steve Bacic, Libby Osler, Barbara Pollard, Ellie Harvie, Darcy Laurie, Sandy Robson, Lexa Doig, Michelle Addison, Miranda Edwards, and Gabrielle Jacinto.

The first part of season five premieres on Sept. 7, followed by two holiday episodes that'll release on Nov. 30.

As revealed in an Instagram Live by Breckenridge, Henderson, and Allen, the upcoming season five consists of 12 episodes, each clocking in at about 40-50 minutes. The first 10 episodes will debut in part one of the season, and it'll conclude with part two's final two episodes.
